Windy Night

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Jaret & Wyatt, Brotherly love

Yesterday the lake was about half frozen  over, but last night the wind blew hard and the ice was gone this morning.   We awoke to 30F it's now 32.4F.  It does look like there will be snow Thursday and Friday - lets hope.

Some of you have been asking how big the boys are getting. Here is a current picture. Wyatt is on top and 7years old, Jaret is on bottom and 8.5 years.

Trail Packing!

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Sunday we got out and packed the ski trail system.  We are now getting calls every couple hours asking about current trail conditions.  Here's the current lo-down.  Currently there is about 6-8 inches of snow in the woods.  After packing the ski trails there is about a 3-4 inch base.  We still need a couple more inches to be able to set tracks.

Gunflint Lake is still not frozen over yet, though this morning it was about half way across from the South side and it looks to be a cool night tonight, so perhaps by morning. . .  .   It also appears we have a 30-40% chance of snow Thursday and Friday so lets hope!  Saganaga Lake is also not frozen yet.  Loon Lake is reportedly half frozen over so use caution where ever you go.

The snowmobile club has been over the entire 107 miles of the Gunflint Trail Grant-in-Aid trail system to brush, clear & pack - but we caution you that there is only about 3-4 inches of base thus far.

The deer are starting to hang around the campground again, and I saw too cow moose on my way to town this morning.  We've been busy cutting and splitting wood while the temperatures hold out.  I'm guessing that we'll bring out the Cross country ski rentals and snowshoes in the morning.

New Snow!

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Last weekend was sunny and beautiful but the past several days have been warmer.  The snow we had, has been compacting and freezing over much like March weather.  it snowed much of today.  This morning I went to a meeting to plan the Gunflint Trail's Winter Tracks Festival.  The whole time we got to watch the big fluffy flakes accumulate to a 3 inch depth.

The new snow is heavy and sticky, perfect for snowman making.  The boys went out after school and built one on their own.  I'll post a picture of that tomorrow

Old Fashioned Holiday!

Tuesday, December 12th, 2006

This past weekend we hosted our 5th annual Holiday weekend.  Here the Carroll party helps decorate the lodge and Camping Cabins.  They also set up the ski trail lights for night skiing.  They did a great job and we look rather festive now!  Thank you.  Come and see for yourself.
