Can it be the end of MAY?

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Hard to believe that it is already the last day of May!  What a month!

I took a ride up to the end of the Gunflint Trail yesterday to survey first hand and while I did see a lot of burn areas what impressed me the most is that already there is a greening up of the forest.  Mother Nature has a wonderful way of keeping her world in check!

Fishing is great according to our guests.  No pictures on this post but hopefully this weekend we will have some.  The fire ban has been lifted in the BWCAW from 7pm to midnight.  Small fires allowed during that time but must be completely doused.

More coming in June….

Memorial Weekend…..Memorial Memories!

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Hello again from the Gunflint Pines where the Memorial Day weekend is getting off with a bang! Just enough moisture to keep the fire ban at bay to allow our guests to enjoy small campfires and the memories that go with a great weekend up North while at the same time warm enough even for our cold blooded southern guests!

Our waterfront has been very busy this morning and below is a good shot of the boats ready to go.  Speaking of boats ready to go look at these great walleye caught locally by our guests the Millers and Kershaws! Mmmmm!

Fire Ban Modified - Water levels raising!

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

We received notification that with the rainfall received this past weekend the DNR has eased the burning restrictions across much of Northern Minnesota.  Specifically - Campfires will again be allowed in designated fire pits assoicated with campgrounds & resorts!!!  We will be allowing campfires and charcoal grill use beginning today.  We will however be encouraging guests to exercise extreme caution with fires, by keeping them small, attending them at all times and putting them out prior to bedtime.

The recent rain has also begun to raise the lake levels.  With more rain expected over the next week.  Fortunately most of the rain has been happening at night, we wake up to wet grounds, but have fairly nice days.  We're excited that this is coming just in time for the Memorial weekend.  We're looking forward to seeing everyone!

More good news!

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

The mandatory evacuation order for the Gunflint Trail beyond Cross River Bridge will be lifted at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22.  This is great news for people wishing to spend time on the Gunflint Trail over the Memorial Day weekend.

The forest service has announced that all BWCAW entry points off the Gunflint Trail with the exception of Larch and Magnetic (#80 and #57) will be open for day and overnight use as of 8 am Tuesday the 22nd as well.

This really is great news.  Our little part of the world is busting out in spring foilage inspite of the snow we had yesterday!  Yes snow!  Some of our southern workers were threatning to go south if that kept up!

Return to Gunflint Lake

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Well we are finally home again!!  About 2 pm this afternoon our little caravan of trailers went made our way from the Grand Marias Municipal Recreation Park up the Gunflint Trail.  I waited in town to pick up the kids after school.  The first question they asked was - do we have to go home right now?  They really enjoyed our little camping experience.  So we played with friends for awhile then ate Sven & Ole's pizzas and made our way home.

As we traveled up the trail it was a little strange.  At first you wouldn't know anything had happened at all. There was a little less traffic and more firetrucks.  Further up the trail by the iron lake area there is about a 1.5 mile stretch where the fire did cross the road.  It's amazing how green and alive the woods can be then suddenly black and charred.  The only other signifigant sign was the view across the lake as you decend down the last hill prior to turning off the Gunflint trail onto County Road 50 (S. Gunflint Lk).  The Canadian shoreline is black as far as the eye can see.   The resort property is all in tact, and untouched.

I have yet to see the fires effects further up the Gunflint Trail as the Road is still closed from the Cross River up.   It's scary to think of what some others will go back to when the are allowed to visit their property.  I guess all we can do is be thankful that this did not happen in July or August when the chance of injury to people not just structures would have been much greater.

We still can't thank you all enough for your thoughts, prayers, calls and e-mails.  You all have been on our minds too.  Tomorrow will be a busy day setting up office once again, but we hope to be back to business as usual by Friday.  I will sleep much better tonight, count my blessings, and start over tomorrow.

Thankfully - Shari
