Bob finishes 2nd in 2nd annual Mush for a Cure.

Monday, March 17th, 2008

The 2nd annual mush for a cure event Mush for a Cure startwas held Saturday and we couldn't have had nicer weather!  With around 20 dog teams on the ice for the start of the run, people intermingled with the mushers and dogs before the start.  At 12 noon the teams were off & running to trail to Trail Center

Bob waiting to race.Bob and the other mushers waited for the run to start in sleeping bags or their dogsleds with their boots off.   As the shotgun went off, they raced to get dressed, hitch up the dogs and take off.  Bob was 6th out of the gate.

The run course ran from here to the Gunflint Snowmobile trail, "up-trail" for about a mile, then turned around for a face off for about a mile then down to Trail Center for a total distance of 24 miles.  Trail Center hosted a bonfire Marshmallow and Weinie Roast for all, followed by an awards ceremony and live band Rod & Reel.

Mushers, handlers and spectators alike were Outrageous Mark Blackurged to wear outrageous pink outifts, with an award being issued to the most outrageous.  The Run went rather quickly with the first team crossing the finish line shortly before 2pm.  Bob was the second team in!!!  He had a blast and thanks to all of those who supported Bob with a pledge he also came in second for money raised.   The event raised just over $13000  - the proceeds of which will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  All in all it was a great day and alot of fun, which I'm sure will be repeated next year!

Just plain fun - Gunflint Trail Style!

Mush for a Cure!

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Tomorrow Bob will be mushing a dog sled team in the Mush For A Cure annual fundriaiser for Breast Cancer Awareness (www.mushforacure.com).  The event was conceived by Sue Prom of Voyageur Canoe Outiftters www.canoeit.com. & Pink Paddles www.pinkpaddles.com, and Mark & Mary Black of Black Magic Kennels (www.blackmagickennels.com).

The race is a fun run for mushers with prizes being awarded for things like the musher wearing the most pink rather than race winners.  This event has a "sourdough/shotgun" start with mushers in sleeping bags on the lake out front.  At the signal they must get up put on their boots, harness their teams and begin the race. They will travel west to the boat launch, then following the snowmobile trail and heading north approximatley 1.5 miles to a turn around point.  The teams will then turn to head south in a face off for about one mile, and continue on the Gunflint snowmobile trail to Trail Center, where the race ends and the festivities begin.  For more information, a race map and musher bio's please visit www.mushforacure.com

If you wish to make a last minute donation to sponsor Bob in the event you can call us with a pledge at 800-533-5814 or e-mail him good luck at info@gunflintpines.com.

Should be a great day!  We hope to have pictures to post either Saturday or Sunday. - Shari

Lovely Lake Trout

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Lake Trout season for Mn Border waters comes to a close March 16th, 2008.  This past weekend we were full up with fishermen giving it their all before the season closes.  Yesterday was overcast and about 11F and the trout were fairly acitve.  Lake Trout averaging 5lbs seemed to be active.  One guest reported that he put his first line in, dropped it about 20ft then stopped to open a can of soda before dropping to the bottom and had a trout double his rod over just like that.

Bob & the boys went out this morning and returned about 2:30 with these two nice trout caught by Wyatt.  Wyatt will definately be the guide in the family.  We probably can begin booking dates for him in 2016 if anyone is interested.
