May 29,2009 FISHING REPORT
Friday, May 29th, 2009Most anglers are after either Lake Trout, Walleye or Smallmouth Bass. Lake Trout are being caught at all levels of the water column from the surface to the bottom in 60 feet of water.
On Sunday I took a couple of guests up to Sag for a day of fishing. After a couple of hours of trolling on the surface, I passed over one of my favorite min-summer reefs that tops off at about 40 feet where I saw some fish near the bottom. We anchored the boat in 57 feet of water and dropped a couple of Ciscoes over the side. Within an hour we had 4 nice eatin' size Lake Trout in the box and headed out in search of Walleye.
The spawning area where the Cross River enters Gunflint Lake opened for fishing on Memorial Day Weekend. This area along with Little Gunflint Lake are producing some good evening/night Walleye action. Bob Tischer of Carlton caught and released a momouth 31.5 inch Walleye last week!
The Smallmouth action has been hot during the day in Little Gunflint. Casting the shallows along the shoreline with either stick baits or live bait rigs has worked well. The Bass have not spawned yet, so it is advised to put the bigger ones back.
