July 25 Fishin Report
Saturday, July 25th, 2009The fish are hungry!
We have had an abundance of unstable weather, but whenever it has been stable the lake trout, smallmouth and walleye have all been feeding.
Sag is producing big numbers of lake trout. There are some really good year classes with lots of small fish in the one to three pound range. A little patience usually results in a nice six to eight pounder. Jigging spoons have produced really well in 40-60 feet of water while fishing the bottom.
Lake trout in Gunflint Lake are being found at 50 feet or deeper. Either jigging or downriggers are producing.
Smallmouth are beginning to show up in the places where you expect to find them this time of year. Off the edge of rock piles and deep shorelines, especially by beaver lodges are good places to look for them. A slip bobber and a leech works really well or a jig with live bait or plastics.
The walleye in the big lakes have made the move to the rock piles on the main bodys of water. Again, bobber fishing with leeches is your best bet.
