Gunflint Trout

Friday, January 28th, 2011

The Lake Trout season has been open for two weeks now and the fishing has been good and a lot of fun. I have been out just about every morning and have had some action every day. The fishing has been consistent up and down the lakewith most of the fish in the 4-5 pound range.  I have a permanent shelter setup on the east end where I have spent most of my time. What’s been fun is that this is the shack I use for spearing in December so when I set it up I cut the big hole (2′ x 4′) and have spent a lot of time fishing right under the ice where I can see the trout when they come in. Yesterday, I had a minnow on a jig hanging about 4 feet down and a jigging spoon on a second rod.  I had a trout come in and take the spoon and before I could pull the minnow out of the water a second trout came in to take the minnow. What fun!

Mush for a Cure – Fight for a name – NBC news

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Many of you know that the “Mush for a Cure” event in March starts here at the Gunflint Pines.  The event was the founded by Mary Black of Black Magic Kennels and Sue Prom of Voyageur Canoe outfitters.  The event was coordinated to help support the fight against Breast Cancer.   Last year a check was written for $30,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

This past year Mush for a Cure received a letter from the Susan G Komen foundation suggesting that we need to change our name from Mush for a Cure, since they have tradmark rights to the term ”For the Cure”.  They have suggested that if MFAC doesn’t change the name  they may be forced to bring legal action, which of course will cost MFAC money in legal fees.   What is more interesting is that MFAC is not the only non-profit’s being “bullied” by the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Our belief is that we are all working for the same cause.  This past Monday night, NBC nightly news did a news clip on this subject.  They interviewed Sue Prom as part of that clip.  More and more infomation is being brought to light on the subject.  If you are interested here are a few video clips or news articles to read.  Of course you can always keep up with what is goin on by accessing either the Mush For A Cure facebook page or the Mush For A Cure website.

Snow again, and cold weather.

Just another 2 inches during yesterday and overnight. Bob hit all the trails again with the groomer. He wanted to pack and set the tracks before the cold weather. Just in time!

Home from school & snow report update

Monday, January 17th, 2011

We got a wake up call at 5:50 am to let us know that School was cancelled today due to the winter storm warnings. So I sprang from my bed, ran to the window and saw only 2 inches of new snow. (diappointing! I was hoping it was more like 8).

Looking at the weather forcast – we’re hopefully getting another 2-4 inches today.
