This past weekend was wonderful! The days were warm, the snow finally melted, there were a lot of firsts for the 2014 season. The first Fish of the season, the first campfire, first Ice cream cones, first Giant Jenga game and the first swimmers! Yes you read it right – we had people swimming on Sunday. Crazy considering there’s still ice on the lake, but some just can’t resist. Granted they just dunked in and didn’t swim long, but I’m willing to give them the credit – because I most certianly do not want it!
Everyone is asking about the ice and fishing. On average Gunflint Lake ice goes out on May 6th or so. Of course this is anything but an average year. The snow is finally gone, but as of a week ago, we thought the ice might never go. The recent rains, and switching wind directions have done wonders and I believe I can safely say that it should be gone this weekend or at least the majority of it will be gone.
Trout were caught this past weekend with guests taking 3, 6 & 8 lbs but I believe this weekend is when the real action will begin.
We’re working hard to make up for the lost time in April. April is when we usually get out around camp to open the campground, bathhouse, and waterlines. We’re picking up winter trash, trimming and hauling brush and downing some dead trees. Now the raking will begin, soon the planting will follow. Docks and boats will be put in, painting and staining.
We’ve gotten a new crop of gifts and clothing, are trying some new food/snack items. Shadow and Sota are busy chasing the grouse and bunnies in the campground, and finding remnants of winter kill to roll in. The early morning bird activity is amazing to listen to. The Loons have returned, and so have some of our favorite guests! Can’t wait to see you all. Come join us in the Northwoods.
